In a ceremony held on Wednesday, October 7, 2015, the running track at the G.C. Foster College of Physical Education & Sport was recommissioned. The track was constructed by German BSW Regupol contractors headed by, Mr. Peter Breuer. The funding for this venture was provided by the Sports Development Foundation (SDF) at a cost of JA$171 million.Work started in April 2015 and was completed in August 2015 with level 2 certification conferred by the International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) on September 14, 2015. Mr. Breuer in his address highlighted that, “despite the challenges faced with the infrastructure, everything was done within budget and on-time”.
This new milestone achieved at the college will be of benefit to not only the institution, but also to the development of track and field in Jamaica. This was underscored by Minister with responsibility for Sport, Hon. Natalie Neita-Headley, who was speaking on behalf of Prime Minister, the Most Hon. Portia Simpson Miller, stating that, “this will be an important part of the focus to market the component for brand Jamaica as we move to attract sports persons to Jamaica for training, especially in their winter seasons”.
The G.C. Foster College of Physical Education and Sport is expecting greater things to come, as in her remarks; Principal Dr. Joyce Graham Royal, expressed the intention to transform the college into a Physical Education and Sport University. She mentioned the development of a High Performance, Assessment, Evaluation and Research Centre, with funding from the Universal Service Fund. She further highlighted another area of progress, which is the diversification of programme offerings, which include the training of Recreational Instructors, the training of Recreational Assistants for nursing homes and a programme called the Emergency Management Training (EMT) programme. This progrmme will be done in conjunction with the Ministry of Health. She expressed the hope that the swimming pool which has been out of commission for over thirty (30) years will be the next major project in the pipeline.
The entire G.C. Foster College family expresses appreciation to everyone who supported this venture in making it a success that it was.
