GC Foster College Holds off Mico to claim College 9s Trophy

GC Foster College were crowned Intercollegiate Rugby League 9-a-side Champions after an intense battle with Mico University College on the final day of the Intercol 9-A-side tournament. The future teachers from both institutions showed themselves to be masters at rugby league

Mico, in only their second year playing rugby league, were the surprise package of the tournament. Going into the final game of the day, Mico led the points standing and needed only to avoid defeat to be crowned outright winners. They had earlier dispatched UWI (12-4), Utech (14-6) and PCC (10-0).

Similarly, the GC Foster team was in a no nonsense mood all day, their players donned black arm bands in memory of their teammate Aldaine Lumsden who tragically died in a recent car accident. They were clinical in turning back the challenge of UWI (36-6), UTech (16-10) and PCC (10-0).

As both teams took the field for the final game of the day, hundreds of students lined the sidelines cheering for their respective team. Both institutions had dominated the tournament with stifling defense, however, GC Foster breached their opponents fortification twice in the first half when Soniel Augustus and then Othniel Holness powered their way over the try line. Ryan Grant and Ryan Spence kicked the conversions respectively.

Mico tried to counterattack with their strike players Romaen Campbell and Oshane Eddie, however, both players came in for some heavy handed treatment whenever they got the ball and neither could penetrate GC Foster’s rock solid defense. GC Foster went into halftime with a comfortable 12-0 lead.

The second half was another defensive quagmire with both teams laying down massive tackles across the field. It remained scoreless until the last minute of the half when GC Foster’s Stephen Scott finally found some space on the right wing and ran in for try that cemented victory for his team. .

GC Foster’s victory saw them locked with Mico on 19 points each at the end of the tournament. Both teams had an identical record of 6 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw, however, GC Foster’s superior goal difference of +94 compared to Mico’s +38, saw the men from St. Catherine secure the coveted trophy for the first time and Mico finish as runners up.

UWI finished third on 15 competition points, while Portmore Community and outgoing Champions, the University of Technology rounded up the standings.
